Carlyn

Carlyn was born September 27, 2003 after a regular full-term pregnancy and delivery.  However, Carlyn showed delays in development and was placed into physical, occupational and speech therapy programs by 8 months of age.  She was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy when she was 1 1/2.  We found out about Conductive Education from a family we met at the Denver Zoo.  Unfortunately, there was not a center nearby at the time.  Just a few months later Carlyn, her mother and baby sister left for Carlyn's first 4-week session at the Conductive Learning Center in Grand Rapids, MI.  After a month of CE we were so impressed!  Carlyn's speech skills and physical strength thrived in the CE environment.  Carlyn had been struggling with traditional therapies before this visit and was absolutely burned out.  As far as Carlyn was concerned, CE was a place to play and use her imagination and yet the conductors creatively work the activities to always benefit her and her specific needs.  We could see that the approach CE takes was exactly what Carlyn needed.  She gained such self-confidence in accomplishing tasks herself, such as feeding, pottying or sitting independently on a chair.  These accomplishments served to motivate her even more.  Carlyn celebrated her third birthday in Michigan and she has been participating in some kind of CE program since.  We are thrilled that Carlyn is now able to attend a local full-time program at CFCE.
